Accepted to IPG, Now What?

or formally entitled: "Things You Need to Prepare for When Enrolling in IPG"

If you reached this page while googling for list of things you need to prepare for your enrollment to IPG, can I just say  Congratulations! and hello fellow junior! *enthusiastic waving*

This post is dedicated to introduce to you young grasshoppers on some traditions in IPG, mainly if you are in IPG Ipoh, or more specifically for TESL-ians of IPG Ipoh.

So what happens during the registration day?

1. White blouse, black kain
Serious talk, you only get to wear them once, or twice during the whole orientation week. So, don't waste your money, lmao. just borrow them from some one, and you're good to go. Don't think too much on this seriously.

2. Waiting in the hall
What you need:
- all the documents they ask you to prepare in the enrollment letter
- pen, pen, pen
- post money (for the fee)

You had to submit your documents (the one they listed in your enrollment letter), fill in some extra documents, get your picture taken for your matrix card and library card, and go to your dorms. If you're in IPG Ipoh, it's quite a far walk from the hall to the dorms. But it's hard to park at the dorms area. So just walk to the Pejabat Asrama first, get your key, know your room, and then call your parents to come and send off your things.

While in the hall, they will ask you to submit your forms to a specific group. Pay extra attention, that's  where you get your first glimpse of your tutor and classmates.

3. The room
*again, this applies to my knowledge and experience of the dorms in IPG Ipoh, since well, I studied here. Other IPGs might have different systems, take note.*

What you need
- pillow
- pillow case, bed sheet, blanket etc.
- broom, dustpan, dustbin
- hangers
- Extension cord (long enough to be placed on the table)

Girls have 8 blocks, Gents have 4. Each with 4 floors, 14 rooms in each floor. One room fits two students - two bed, two cupboards, two tables with drawers, curtains and that's it. There might or might not be pillows, so prepare your own. Bring also your bed sheet, pillow covers, broom, dustpan and dustbin. If you arrive early, you should be able to get into your room by at least 1030 am. From then you have till lunchtime to clean your room, hang your clothes and to make yourself comfortable.

*Take note, for you health-conscious people out there - the curtain is ages old, so you might wanna steer away from it, until you have the time to clean or replace it. Clean everything in the room, because it was at least weeks old since the last person stepped in.*

It is TOTALLY FINE to bring you extension cord, your iron and iron board, and all your phone charger, ipod charger, mp3 charger, laptop charger on the first day. I have 'em all on the first day, and nobody cares.

If you happened to meet your roommate, be nice and say hi. No matter how socially-awkward you are, that is the person you're going to live with for the next 4 - 5 years of study. Be nice. Start little conversations. Make jokes and try to be friendly. Trust me, this is one of the most important things you need to  do to survive in here.

4. Say goodbye to your parents

5. Get your lunch - and follow the activity listed throughout the week

All in all, what you will do during this orientation week is mostly,
- learn about what the whole PPISMP course is
: pay extra attention to the flow of the course, how many hours specified for each course, how many course will you be taking each sem, what are the papers you'll be taking for exam

- learn about Akta 174
: what you need to avoid to do to avoid getting kicked out of campus
: mostly it talks about no rebelling, follow the rules, not go back to hometown before the specified time, attend classes etc, you know the typical lecture

- get to know your course, major and minor
: just listen briefly, you get to listen to this explanation at the start of every course every sem, so , no difference

- know your classmates, coursemates and tutor
: the fun part, meeting your new classmates!
: choose your KU (ketua unit) and PKU (penolong ketua unit) : the ones who will be responsible for the rest of the sem
: get names and phone numbers of everyone and save them all, trust me, very important. girls, get each other's room number too.
: the moment you meet your tutor, decide to like him or her, no other choices. that lecturer will be your parent for the rest of the years you will be in IPG. treat them like one. Whatever happens, listen to them, no matter what they know better, always.

- know the campus
: know all the important places in the campus - cafe, kooperasi, classrooms, surau, library, HEP office, main office, anjung / receptionist counter, dewan (all of the various dewan you have), padang etc

Well, that is about all that happens during your first week in IPG. More info, tips and tricks coming up in future posts. Till then, live long and prosper, juniors!
